Car rental with a safari guide/cook

Kip’s 4×4 Hire offers car rental with a driver/cook for your ease. This option is great for road-trippers who don’t fancy driving themselves, want a more relaxed experience, or want to learn more about the local culture and wildlife in East Africa. All our drivers are experienced tour guides/cooks and bush mechanics

For the additional cost of only USD $80 / day, all the suggested trip routes on our website are also possible to book as a private guided tour. The ultimate customized safari!

This is an all-inclusive price and caters for all expenditures incurred by the driver-guide, including meals and accommodation. Aside from this, you will only pay for your driver’s entrance fee at the national parks (around $15 per day). Airport pick up and drop off is included in the rental price when you book a car with a driver.

Is East Africa a safe region for self drive?

We have travelled the regions up and down and know all the hidden corners of East Africa. We find Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda to be a very safe country’s for a self-drive holiday, and we wouldn’t offer our services here if it wasn’t. However, the road conditions in East Africa can be quite challenging, with many rutted roads and a lot of dirt roads inside the national parks. Do keep in mind that road-tripping in East Africa requires self-reliance. We are also available 24/7 for roadside assistance.

Secondhand vehicles
Kindly note that we hire out well maintained secondhand vehicles. However, sometimes mechanical issues may occur and this is something you should take into consideration in general with hiring vehicles in countries where the roads are rough. We suggest leaving enough time in your itinerary for the unexpected.

Restricted areas
Some parts of East Africa are restricted areas for self-drive, because of poor road conditions and remoteness, making it difficult to offer assistance when needed.

Precautions
We trust you to travel sensibly. That means taking the following precautions:

  • Always travel with cash, a charged phone with airtime, enough water and some food.
  • When you fuel up your car, know where the next gas station is.
  • Always park your car at a private and secure parking lot.
  • Do not travel after dark (6PM) and why would you want to anyway? Fellow road users often drive without lights or put on their high beams so you can’t see a thing.
  • The biggest mistake travelers make is wanting to cover too much ground in one trip. Travel is a great deal slower than you are probably used to, and being on the road is much more tiresome. Use one of our suggested routes as a starting point to assess if your plans are realistic.

Enjoy your road-trip at a Kenyan pace. Hakuna Matata.
